Quartzite

Quartzite is a naturally occurring metamorphic stone formed from sandstone under intense heat and pressure, prized for its hardness and quartz-like veining. It outperforms marble in scratch and etch resistance while delivering comparable visual drama on countertops and feature walls. The original quartz grains recrystallize and fuse under that pressure, and the fusing is where the hardness comes from.

The name gets used loosely in the slab yard, and that is the first thing to know. Material sold as quartzite ranges from true, fully metamorphosed stone to soft dolomitic marble labeled optimistically. A real quartzite will not etch when a lemon sits on it. A mislabeled slab will. Ask for a water test and an acid test on the actual slab you are buying, not on a sample chip from the counter.

In Arizona kitchens, quartzite earns its premium two ways. It tolerates a hot pan set down without thinking, which matters in houses built around entertaining, and it holds its color under the UV load that comes through a wall of south-facing glass. Fine desert dust is abrasive, and quartzite is hard enough to keep its finish through years of wiping that would dull a softer stone.

We specify quartzite by the slab, never by the sample. Every block is different, so we tag the exact slabs at the yard, plan the layout against the island and the backsplash returns, and confirm the fabricator's seam locations before anything gets cut. Finish changes the stone as much as color does: honed reads quieter and hides water spots, polished pushes the veining forward, leathered gives you texture under the hand. Most quartzites still want a penetrating sealer, and the honest test is simple. Leave water on the slab for 15 minutes and see whether it darkens.
