An enclosed or semi-enclosed transitional space — typically a covered patio that has been screened, glassed, or otherwise conditioned — that functions as a buffer between the interior of a home and the desert exterior. It originated as a vernacular solution to Arizona's temperature extremes and remains a defining architectural feature in mid-century and ranch-style Scottsdale homes.
